The Five ‘No’s’ on a CV

This is a short and sweet blog post, but it is amazing how many CVs make the simplest of mistakes. It is worth highlighting the five ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ to the perfect CV.

  1. No: Don’t make any spelling mistakes anywhere, even back in 2001 in your first ever job.

Yes: Do get a friend to cast their eye over your CV to check for typos or grammar errors. ChatGPT is great, but a human eye can check better that it all makes sense.

  1. No: Don’t go over 1-2 pages unless you really, really need 3 because you have had a bumper of a career.

Yes: Do feel free to cut out that first job post-uni or just put one line and refer to it. If your first or even second job has no relevance to what you are doing currently, then we don’t need to see it.

  1. No: Don’t choose style over substance. Unless you are a creative, employers would much rather see a simpler CV packed with substance than fewer words and stylistic features – and they don’t need to see that photo of you from back in 2001! We get that it was a good year!

Yes: Do have a simple, effectively styled CV.

  1. No: Don’t provide a job description for each role. We know what jobs entail.

Yes: Do focus on achievements, results, wins, and growth rather than a to-do list. What did you do, why did you stand out, what did you bring to the table?

  1. No: Controversial perhaps, but don’t use words like ‘seasoned.’ We hate that word at elphin. You are saying, “I am old.” No one should care! What we care about is that you are hugely experienced, bringing 15-20 years of amazing, rich achievements and business growth.

Yes: Do say you are hugely experienced.
